Michael Buchman, LAC

Supervised by Ashlyn Rost, LPC, ACS

I help individuals, couples, and families better understand the patterns, emotions, and protective parts of themselves that may be keeping them stuck—so they can build healthier relationships, feel more emotionally grounded, and create lasting change.

Many of the clients I work best with are people who feel caught in recurring emotional cycles, overthink constantly, struggle with self-criticism, shut down in relationships, or find themselves reacting in ways they don’t fully understand. Often, they are insightful and self-aware, but still feel disconnected from themselves or stuck in patterns they’ve been unable to change on their own.

I provide telehealth therapy throughout New Jersey for individuals, couples, and families navigating anxiety, depression, emotional stress, relationship challenges, and family conflict.

My goal is to create a space where you feel safe exploring what’s happening beneath the surface without judgment. Together, we work to better understand your internal world, strengthen communication, and develop practical tools that help you move through life and relationships with greater clarity, confidence, and self-compassion.

My Approach

My work is strongly influenced by Internal Family Systems (IFS), and I am currently pursuing advanced training and certification in the model. IFS helps clients understand the different ā€œpartsā€ of themselves—such as the inner critic, the anxious part, the people-pleasing part, or the emotionally reactive part—with greater curiosity and compassion rather than shame or judgment.

This approach can be especially helpful for clients who feel emotionally overwhelmed, disconnected, stuck in repeating patterns, or conflicted internally.

I also integrate:

  • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)

  • Psychodynamic Therapy

  • Attachment-based approaches

In couples and family work, I incorporate:

  • Gottman Method

  • Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT)

I am continuing advanced study in EFT to deepen my work with couples and help partners build stronger emotional connection, communication, trust, and security within their relationships.

My approach is collaborative, flexible, and tailored to each client’s unique experiences and goals.

What It’s Like to Work with Me

My style is thoughtful, supportive, and collaborative. I work to create an environment where you feel heard, understood, and comfortable exploring difficult emotions and experiences at your own pace.

In our sessions, we’ll look not only at what’s happening in the present, but also at the deeper emotional patterns and protective responses shaping your thoughts, behaviors, and relationships. I believe meaningful change happens when insight is paired with compassion, curiosity, and practical action.

Whether you’re coming in individually or with a partner, therapy is tailored to your specific needs and goals. Sessions are designed to help you better understand yourself, improve communication, and build healthier ways of relating to both yourself and others.
