Dual Diagnosis: Substance Use and Mental Health

Address addiction and mental health challenges together. Discover integrated online therapy designed to break the cycle and support lasting, sustainable recovery.

Overview

Dual diagnosis treatment addresses both a mental health condition and a substance use disorder at the same time, helping individuals understand how mental health and addiction often impact one another. Also known as co-occurring disorders treatment, dual diagnosis therapy supports emotional wellness, substance abuse recovery, relapse prevention, and long-term stability by treating both conditions together rather than separately.

At Waves of Change Counseling and Healing, we provide telehealth dual diagnosis therapy and substance abuse counseling for adults across New Jersey. Common co-occurring concerns include depression and alcohol misuse, anxiety and opioid dependence, PTSD and stimulant use, trauma-related disorders, and other combinations of mental health challenges and addiction. Through online therapy and compassionate mental health support, clients can begin building healthier coping strategies, emotional regulation skills, and sustainable recovery.

Treatment Approaches

Our clinicians use evidence-based therapeutic methods tailored to each client’s unique needs and recovery goals, including:

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT):
Helps clients identify and shift unhelpful thought patterns and behaviors that contribute to emotional distress, substance use, and difficulty coping with stress.

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT):
Focuses on building practical skills for emotional regulation, distress tolerance, mindfulness, and healthier interpersonal relationships.

Trauma-Informed Care:
Recognizes the impact trauma can have on mental health and substance use while creating a safe, supportive environment for healing and recovery.

Motivational Interviewing:
A collaborative approach that helps clients explore ambivalence, strengthen motivation for change, and build confidence in the recovery process.

Individual & Group Counseling:
Provides opportunities for personal reflection, emotional support, skill-building, accountability, and connection with others navigating similar challenges.

Family Therapy:
Helps improve communication, rebuild trust, and support healthier relationship dynamics impacted by mental health or substance use concerns.

Relapse Prevention Planning:
Supports clients in identifying triggers, building coping strategies, and developing sustainable tools to maintain long-term recovery.

Mindfulness-Based Interventions & Holistic Wellness Strategies:
Encourages greater self-awareness, stress reduction, emotional balance, and overall well-being through practices that support both mind and body.
