What happens during “Yoga Nidra”
Yoga Nidra is practiced lying comfortably on your back, often supported with blankets, bolsters, or pillows so the body can fully relax. Once everyone is settled, the instructor begins guiding the practice with gentle verbal cues.
While each teacher may guide it slightly differently, most Yoga Nidra sessions follow a similar structure:
1. Settling the Body
The practice begins by helping you get comfortable and still. You’re invited to notice your breath and allow the body to soften into the floor or mat.
2. Body Awareness
You’ll be guided to move your attention through different parts of the body — often called a body scan. This helps release physical tension and encourages the nervous system to shift into a deeper state of relaxation.
3. Breath Awareness
Attention is brought to the natural rhythm of the breath. Simply observing the breath helps quiet mental activity and deepen relaxation.
4. Guided Imagery or Sensory Awareness
Some Yoga Nidra practices include visualization, gentle imagery, or awareness of sensations. This helps the mind stay lightly engaged while the body continues to rest.
5. Deep Rest
As the practice continues, many people enter a state between waking and sleeping. The body becomes very relaxed while the mind remains softly aware.
6. Gradual Return
Toward the end of the session, the instructor slowly guides awareness back to the room so you can return feeling calm, grounded, and refreshed.
Throughout the entire practice, there is nothing you need to do or achieve. If your mind wanders or you drift in and out of sleep, that’s completely normal. The intention of Yoga Nidra is simply to create the conditions for deep rest and nervous system reset.
“Such a great yoga Nidra experience! The session was calming and easy to settle into, and I felt completely relaxed the whole time!”
— Jamie H.
